From the Aramaic, meaning "twin". The name of one of the twelve apostles and many saints, it was made popular by Thomas a Beckett in the twelth century and has become one of the most popular names for boys.The use of Tommy as a nickname for a British private soldier goes back to the 19th century, when the enlistment form had on it the specimen signature, "Thomas Atkins.
