Margaret:
From the Latin Margarita, derived from the Greek word meaning "a pearl". The ultimate origin is thought to be Persian meaning "a child of light". The Persians believed that pearls were formed when oysters rose from their beds at night to look at the moon and trapped a drop of dew in their shells, which was transformed into a pearl by the moonbeams. The name spread to Scotland in the 11th century and "Maggie" is a particularly Scottish pet form.
