| Isabel Originally a Spanish form of "Elizabeth", meaning "God's promise". The name was imported into France and England in the middle ages. It was a royal name, borne by Queen Isabella of England (1296-1358), daughter of Philip lV of France. Williiam Shakespeare used the name for the heroine of his play, "Measure for Measure". |
