Alexis:
From the Greek, meaning "helper" or "defender".
St. Alexis was a favourite saint in the middle ages. He lived by begging, sharing all he received with other poor people. On his death it was discovered that he was a Roman nobleman, who left his bride on his wedding day to live in poverty.
